What is Respite?
Respite support is when carers can take a short-term or time-limited break while someone else supports the person with a disability and ensures they have a positive experience.

Who can get respite support?
Unpaid carers of people aged between 6 and 64 years who have a disability such as;
- An acquired brain injury
- An intellectual or physical disability
- A degenerative neurological condition
- may be eligible for respite support.
- Is respite support planned or unplanned?
Respite support is flexible and can be:
Planned throughout the year so that there are regular or occasional breaks, for example, support can be for a couple of hours, a day, a weekend, a week or more.
Unplanned when a break is needed at short notice and/or an emergency when there is an immediate need such as a carer going to hospital.
What type of supports can Respite provide?
Respite support includes:
- Community participation
- Participation in every day activities such as cultural festivals or holiday programs
- In home support
- Support in a family environment
- Camp, holidays or weekends away
- Facility based overnight stays
- Carer retreats
- Other flexible options to suit a person’s needs
Who is a Carer?
A carer can be a parent, sister, brother, husband, wife, partner, poster parent, grandparent, son, daughter or anyone else who supports a person with a disability in their home.
